Shakespeare has been on our minds here at Wellington College International School Bangkok in the last few weeks. In this term our Years 7, 8 and 9 students study Shakespeare in Drama and English and then each class performs a Shakespeare Sharing for fellow students. On Friday 10 March 2023, Year 9 staged a very dramatic Macbeth with atmospheric lighting and sound effects, in our Old School Shop Drama Studio. Well done to all the students who really got into their parts and especially those who were last minute stand-ins!
Head of Drama, Mr Conor McKee, followed this up with a wonderful assembly on Monday 13 March 2023 addressing "Why We Study Shakespeare". There are so many reasons why and Mr McKee held the students enthralled as he explained how Shakespeare's plays have inspired so many things including novels, films and video games. He shared the importance of the Globe theatre and the staging of Shakespeare's plays and the power of Shakespeare's monarch - Queen Elizabeth I. Perhaps most important is Shakespeare's influence on the English language. Next time you think of something as fashionable, radiant or worthless - you are quoting Shakespeare. And next time you "vanish into thin air" or notice that someone has "a heart of gold", remember Shakespeare invented these phrases and many, many more. Lots more Shakespeare to come - in class, in the theatre and all around us.
