An opportunity for Senior School students at Wellington College International School Bangkok to learn more about other cultures and languages took place last week, with students exploring La Fête de la Musique, also now called in English, World Music Day.

This is an event created under Jack Lang, French Minister of Culture, in 1982 with the purpose to promote all sorts of music both amateur and professional performed on the streets and in organised free concerts, as a celebration of French identity and culture. This yearly celebration has now spread to other countries around the world. It is now celebrated in over 700 cities in 120 countries on the 5 continents. This year is the 40th edition of La Fête de la Musique in France. Led by Ms Nathalie Findlay, French Teacher at Wellington, there were a number of activities for students to explore and enjoy here in Bangkok.

In these current times, the power of learning a second or third language cannot be understated and students at Wellington benefit greatly from small class sizes, individual focus and attention which will give them a significant advantage as they progress through the course.

To get students into the swing of things, French popular music was played in the morning before school and during breaks. There was then a House competition - a special French Quiz during House tutor time. And at lunch, students were treated to some traditional French cuisine including Beef Bourguignon, Potato-Leek Gratin, Quiche Lorraine and Ratatouille!

As part of celebrating La Fête de la Musique and learning French language and culture, Year 7 also had the chance to have a go at the popular French game of Pétanque. The game has a very long history and is played all over France by people of all backgrounds and ages.

Thank you to Ms Findlay for organising this French festival, culture, and customs for our students.  Ms Findlay is a native French speaker with nearly twenty years’ experience teaching Modern Foreign Languages to a wide range of levels. We are honoured to have her as our French teacher for Senior School students.
