Mr Jon Fudge, Director of Sport at Wellington College International School Bangkok explains our ‘Sport for All’ philosophy and how this approach delivers success to students way beyond the sporting arena.
Following in the famous tradition of Wellington College in the UK, from the very first day Wellington College Bangkok opened in August 2018, the guiding philosophy for our sport programme has been to offer a breadth and depth of opportunities to our students.
This ensures a culture of sporting inclusion across School, from elite levels to those embarking on the exciting prospect of learning a new sport for the first time.
At Wellington, we understand that success is the complex equation of personal growth and motivation, underpinned by expert teaching and guidance that occurs in all sport. This success can be measured not just in medals and trophies but in the development and maturity of our students who learn a variety of new skills, gain confidence, and discover their sporting passions which will carry them through their time in education and beyond.
Subsequently, this approach then translates to positive outcomes in the sporting arena – only in the last week, our teams picked up an array of medals in football, golf and swimming. Our emerging cricket programme goes from strength to strength and our tennis scholars continue to show great potential. This week, our basketball teams were in action, with our Junior Girls Team winning their tournament. This is all achieved through the careful guidance of our professional specialist coaches including a former three-time Olympic swimmer, an ex-professional cricketer, current PGA golfer as well as professionally qualified basketball, tennis and football coaches.
We will always continue to offer a breadth and depth of opportunities to all students at Wellington through the curriculum, extra-circular activities, House competitions, elite competitions, and inter-school events. Coming up later in the Summer Term, we are honoured to be part of a select group of international schools competing in the inaugural Bangkok Games of which Wellington will be co-hosts and where students will again participate in a range of sports including athletics, swimming, netball, touch rugby, basketball, and football.
At Wellington College International School Bangkok, we always remember that sport is fun. Sport is a great way to make friends. Sport is for us all.
