Chinese New Year is one of the biggest celebrations in China and in Chinese communities around the world. This year, Chinese New Year falls on Tuesday 1st February and the celebrations last for two weeks, starting on the New Year eve and ending on 15th February with the Lantern Festival, which marks the full moon.

Each year is associated with one of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac. This year is the Year of the Tiger.

At Wellington College International School Bangkok, a cross-curricula approach to learning about Chinese language and culture has resulted in a diverse range of exciting experiences for students.

Beginning last week with ‘Discover China Week’, students have immersed themselves in a variety of subjects covering all aspects of Chinese language, history, society, and culture. In Senior School, students have been developing their Mandarin language learning through their study of Chinese idioms, presenting confidently in Mandarin to fellow classmates. There has also been an exploration of Kung Fu and Chinese dance in preparation for a special assembly on Friday.

Some highlights from Junior School include students learning about famous Chinese cities in their Theme learning, incorporating Chinese songs into their music lessons, as well as learning about traditional Chinese opera in Art & Design. Students have also had the opportunity to prepare and sample traditional Chinese cuisine as well as being treated to a special Dragon Parade led by Senior School students. A truly eclectic mix of learning opportunities which our students have thoroughly enjoyed.

新年快乐!
