Michael Antona, the Head of Golf, reflects on an exceptional weekend of golfing success for students of Wellington College International School Bangkok.
This weekend, Wellington had seven of its Golf Team taking part in competitive tournaments. Max, Gam, Ben and Nava played in a TDJT event at Suvarnabhumi Golf and Country Club Bangkok; Music and Jesper both played at Dynasty Golf Club in an TJGAA Optimist event; and Prim played at Lake View Resort and Golf Club in a Chang Junior Championship.
It was an exciting couple of days for the golfers, all playing against strong competition and having to perform at their very best under pressure.
Nava is already competing in the 7–8 Girls’ Class E Division at the age of six. She has returned from her recent success in America, finishing 6th at the Junior Worlds, and winning her first ever tournament in the USA. Nava is more determined than ever to keep improving and this step-up in age and distance will only benefit her in continuing to improve and challenge her skills. Nava finished third this week and is getting better all the time.
Max showed great character after a nervy start on the first day. He came back fighting -leading by six shots after the first day. On the second day, he did not miss a shot in furthering his lead, before inclement weather brought proceedings to an early conclusion.
Gam had a rollercoaster ride over the two days, with a mixture of excellent golf and some unlucky breaks. She will learn a lot from the tournament after a few months without tournament golf.
Ben is handling the new challenge of playing with golfers in the year above him on much longer golf courses. Over the two days, Ben did not miss a fairway and his short game was superb. He had a three shot lead when play was stopped with five holes to play. After 27 holes, he was tied with another competitor, so a play-off was required. This was exciting for everyone watching and with an immaculate final approach shot, he secured a well-deserved win.
Jesper competed at Dynasty Golf Club, winning his age division. Jesper now has an opportunity in his next event to win a seat abroad to a tournament outside of Thailand.
Music competed at the same event as Jesper and finished in the top five. Music has been working hard on her golf game, and promises a big success in a forthcoming tournament. Music had recently hurt her ankle and finishing in the top five is credit to her resilience.
Prim played brilliantly over the weekend finishing second in her age group. Although disappointed not to win, with her first tournament out of the way she will be able to continue to improve and like all of the Wellington golfers, she has a massive year ahead.
